뉴욕 맨해튼 토머스 스트리트 33번지에 위치한 ‘AT&T 롱 라인스 빌딩’은 1974년 완공된 전형적인 브루탈리즘 양식의 건물이다. 상단에 위치한 환풍구를 제외하면 외부로 나 있는 창문이 하나도 없는 이 건물은 뉴욕시의 미스터리로, 수많은 음모론을 낳았다.

냉전 시기 외부의 물리적 타격과 핵전쟁에 따른 방사능 낙진으로부터 핵심 교환 설비를 보호하기 위해 창문이 전혀 없는 폐쇄적인 콘크리트 구조로 설계되었다는 설이 있지만, 정확한 용도는 여전히 명확히 밝혀지지 않았다.

단순한 민간 통신 시설을 넘어 국가 안보와 직결된 전략적 요충지이자, 고도의 보안을 유지하는 데이터 처리 거점이라는 점은 분명해 보인다.


Located at 33 Thomas Street in Manhattan, New York, the AT&T Long Lines Building was completed in 1974 and stands as a quintessential example of Brutalist architecture. Aside from the ventilation shafts positioned at the top, the structure has no visible exterior windows, a feature that has fueled numerous conspiracy theories and contributed to its reputation as one of New York City’s enduring mysteries.

During the Cold War, it was reportedly designed as a sealed concrete structure without windows in order to protect critical switching equipment from physical attacks and radioactive fallout in the event of nuclear war. However, its exact operational purpose has never been fully clarified.
